Friday Sept 28

Well, today we got some stuff DONE.

We talked about the Theme Study that was given out yesterday, and how to fill it out and what to put where. We will keep working on it on Monday and Tuesday.

Monday is the start of October. We are 10% done this year. Sounds so impressive when I write it that way.

We read to page 78 in the text and got question 13 to do for homework.

Please, please don't leave this stuff to the last minute to get done. Do it now! Get a round to it!

If you need one, here one is:

Logging in to D2L

Ok, everyone, I'm not starting this right away, but you should check out how to log in to the D2L system. I'll put the link to the site on the right-hand side of the blog to make it easier.

You will need your log-in information and a lot of patience.

Oh, and use Google Chrome. It's basically the browser that D2L was designed around so a lot of things just work better with Chrome.

There are also a lot of D2L help videos on youtube.

Wed Sept 26

So we mentioned a number of things in class today while reading to page 64 in the novel. We also got Question 12 for homework.

First off, we mentioned these two fellas ... that's Segal with the Dalai Lama and Richard Gere in the movie Pretty Woman.

In any case, I also mentioned a few movies today and yaks. The movies (Hiking Through, Seven years in Tibet and Ten Questions for the Dalai Lama) I put links into the "Helpful Links" section for this novel and the yak from Zootopia ... well, here he is:

Tuesday Sept 25

So ... we read a fair amount today - we got to page 45 in the text and got questions 8, 9 and 10 from the unit outline to work on for homework.

Dang ... I just realized I forgot to assign a "reaction" question to the group.

Hmmm...

ok, tomorrow!

Anyway, this is from the IG account of Outside Magazine, the people that hired the author of the book to get himself up to the summit of Everest.

Cool.

Monday Sept 24

Yup, it is a Monday today.

We read to the end of Chapter 3 and got questions 6 and 7 from the Unit outline for homework.

I did take up and show on the big screen how to do Number 5 as well:

In any case, we had a good time in class discussing what people's own ... and the teacher's own ...version of "wanting to climb Everest" might look like. For me, it was participating in the Senior Wrestling Nationals in 2012.

Hope tomorrow is better - everything is going to be alright!

Wednesday,Thursday and Friday Sept 21

Ugh.

I'm starting to post the wrong things on the wrong blogs. Sorry about that.

These three days were spent doing presentations from the Story Unit, working a bit on writing tasks and then starting to read the novel Into Thin Air.

We got to page 23 in the novel today and we also got the novel outline. I'll post Helpful Links today on this blog, too.

Friday and Tuesday Sept 18

So I worked with a few students with their presentations that are due in the next few days today. I worked with a few others with their pieces of writing due on Thursday.

And so, after I got through that, we did some reading of the next unit, a novel Into Thin Air.

Here is the very first part of that unit, a Web Quest:

Into Thin Air web quest

1.  Go to the Wikipedia page for this novel (and film, if you’d like). After doing a bit of poking around, what are five things you can tell me about Jon Krakauer, the guy who wrote the novel?

2.  In an informal piece of writing of about 100 words, why, do you think, that Mr Chesser would include this novel in the 4C course this semester.

3.  How is this novel different from other novels you have read in school? What are some similarities to other books you have read in other English courses?

4.  What lead this author to choose this topic for an article?

5.  What are three ideas that different people involved with this misadventure have conflicts about? Why might there be some “hard feelings” about these ideas?

While reading, I mentioned this jump from almost space from a few years ago:

Wed Sept 12 and Thursday Sept 13

Forgot to post Wednesday - we did the short story Taste of Melon as a group.

Then on Thursday, we got kicked out of our classroom and had class in the library. Should be good to go tomorrow back in our regular spot.

In the library, we took up questions and worked together to make sure everything was ready to go for tomorrow - Task One is due, after all.

Then we worked a little on Task Three - the Piece of Writing. We will be working on this again tomorrow and next week, too.

Here is my powerpoint from the day. Get to Step TWO for Friday, please.

Tuesday Sept 11

So we almost finished the Romeo Dallaire video today. The wireless just didn't want to cooperate.

Tomorrow we will move on - if you want to finish the last twenty or so minutes, the video is below.

During the video, Canadian music legend Stompin Tom Connors is mentioned. Here is the music that was played today:

Sept 6

Today was an interesting one in class - the wireless was having difficulty and so we did the best we could with what we had.

We did read a short story - Chekov's "The Lottery Ticket". The questions will be discussed in class on Friday.

I did do a brief introduction about the Task Two Presentations, but I'll do more ...on Friday.

Sept 5

Today was a hot one in the portable.

I've grateful for the patience and dedication of my students. You people were awesome.

We got the Unit Outline - basically a description of what we are going to be doing in class for the next few weeks. I also posted the due dates in class and on this blog today, too.

We started on Task One the Journal today by reading "Why Canada Has to beat it's Literacy Problem", an essay by June Callwood.

We also got the Terms for the unit as well - I've already posted them on this blog, too.

We had some time left over to complete work for this course. I was impressed.

Sept 4 - after class

I thought everything went well today. In chit-chatting with the Period 4 teacher, there are a number of items needed for the class that will make their way to the portable by tomorrow.

In any case, we did the introduction to the course, had a frank discussion about the classroom expectations and then looked at a short poem from a Canadian poet and professor of Literature.

here is the poem again:

In any case, thank you for a great first day!

Welcome to Grade 12 College level English!

If you are reading this ... this is a good place to start working towards finishing high school with a mark in this course that can help you get you to where you want to be next semester and next year.
